Welcome to our organization

Mental illness has long been ignored in Nepal, with little recognition given to mental health needs and more specifically to the needs of people who are mentally ill. The reasons for this are complex and varied, ranging from cultural beliefs in spiritual causes to the stigma associated with having a family member with a mental illness.

Mental illness is a condition that not only impacts the individual but also his or her family and even extends to the community as a whole. It is manifested through emotional stress, stigma and can have severe financial repercussions when the earning ability of an individual is reduced or when extra medical bills need to be paid.

Furthermore, very limited legal provisions currently
exist for people suffering with mental illness. Even those laws that do exist are open to interpretation,
often to the detriment of mentally ill people.

Globally mental illness accounts for 12.3% of the total burden of diseases in the world. Detailed figures for Nepal are not available, but it is expected that they are comparable to the global figures, or more.

Over the past couple of years, there have been efforts by the Government and NGOs to support mentally ill people and their families. But, most organizations work in isolation with little contact or referral between them. They also do not focus nor target the homeless who due to their illness and isolation have become the most neglected group in the country.
